1933-2026

Hounslow Liberal Democrats are sad to report the death on 2nd April 2026 of former councillor John Howliston at the age of 92.

John served as a Liberal Democrat councillor between the years 1998 and 2010. John initially won a seat in the ward of East Bedfont from Labour in a by-election in October 2000. Following boundary changes, John was re-elected as the sole Liberal Democrat councillor for Bedfont ward in the borough elections of 2002 and 2006. The 2010 council elections coincided with the higher turnout General Election leading to the defeat of John and his four Liberal Democrat colleagues. John, and his wife Robina, remained supporters of the Liberal Democrats assisting parliamentary candidates including future Twickenham MP, Munira Wilson.

As a young man, John was honoured by the United Nations for his service in the Korean War. John subsequently qualified as a surveyor. He was involved in a huge range of organisations in Hounslow including MENCAP, the Fairtrade Campaign and the Feltham & Bedfont Carnival. On Hounslow Council John was an advocate for the need to invest in youth services.
