Hammersmith Bridge

Government must FUND Hammersmith Bridge repairs

Hammersmith Bridge is a vital north-south link across the River Thames and its sudden closure, following the discovery of more cracks, to all users has come as a massive blow to communities on both sides of the river.

The Government is well aware of the importance of this crossing to Londoners.  In the run-up to 2019’s General Election various transport ministers, including the Secretary of State for Transport - Grant Shapps MP, visited the bridge and promised that if a Conservative Government was elected they would fund a temporary bridge and work with all parties to fix the main bridge.

The Conservative Government could have stepped in immediately after winning the General Election in December 2019, and built the temporary bridge which they pledged to do 8 months later.  There is still no bridge.

This petition calls on the Government, and the Secretary of State for Transport, to honour the promise they made to the people of South West London.

Only the Government has the money to fund these repairs to Hammersmith Bridge. The repair bill of £140 million is too great for any council to bear, and Transport for London is unable to find funding to commit to this project.

A recent survey from Sarah Olney MP, with a response rate of over 2000 residents, showed that nearly 1800 of those residents felt the Government should step in and fund the repairs.

The Government must not delay any further.
