The Government's long-awaited public consultation into plans for a major programme of expansion at Heathrow Airport was finally launched today. Hounslow Liberal Democrats are backing the local cross-party "Say No" to Heathrow expansion campaign. There are eight ways you can give your backing to the campaign.

The consultation will run until 27th February 2008 and will look at proposals to:

  • Replace runway alternation with mixed mode

  • Build a third runway and a sixth terminal

  • Scrap the Cranford Agreement

  • Review Westerly Preference

These proposals represent the biggest threat the borough has ever faced. Expansion could mean:

  • Heathrow's capacity doubling in little more than a decade

  • 6,000 more planes flying in and out of Heathrow every week

  • A plane flying over the borough every 30 seconds at peak times

  • Residents losing the half-day's peace and quiet they currently enjoy
