Kramer argues that estate agents should have to take exams

12.00.00am GMT Mon 19th Mar 2007

Susan Kramer, Lib Dem MP for Richmond Park, is urging the government to set up qualifications for estate agents as part of new legislation going through Parliament.

Susan Kramer said:

"Buying a property is one of the most important decisions people make in their lives. In Kingston many have to take on big mortgages to match local property prices.

"It is a substantial investment and these days, with so many missing out on pensions, it can be a financial lifeline in later life.

"The vast majority of buyers and sellers have no expertise around the property market yet they place themselves in the hands of unqualified estate agents.

"People wouldn't dream of getting their legal work done by an unqualified solicitor.

"It is time we entered the 21st century and had a proper system of accreditation for people who work as estate agents."
