Hounslow Lib Dems join twenty thousand on march for peace12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sun 6th Aug 2006
Cllr Andrew Dakers, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Brentford & Isleworth, yesterday joined Lib Dem colleagues and twenty thousand other protesters who took to London's streets. Marching from Hyde Park Corner to Parliament Square they called for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East conflict. Protesters left children's shoes at the Cenotaph in protest at the deaths of children in the conflict. Cllr Andrew Dakers said: "Many people from Hounslow, touched by the plight of the families caught in the middle of this tragic conflict, joined the march to show their support for an urgent peace settlement. "The UN resolution agreed between France and the US is a step towards securing a sustainable peace in the area. However on its own this is not enough. "For their part, the governments in the Middle East, including Syria and Iran, must press for a Hezbollah ceasefire and the return of the Israeli soldiers. Israel will also need to commit to withdrawing from Lebanon to allow an international stabilisation force to patrol a buffer zone."
