Commenting on the High Court ruling against the Home Office on the issue of sham marriages, Andrew Dakers, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Brentford & Isleworth, said: "This ruling will be welcome news for thousands of couples who have been subjected to an undignified and discriminatory system. Sham marriages have to be tackled, but checks should be sensitive and proportionate, and should not single out particular religious groups.

"British people should be able to choose who they want to marry without having to ask the Home Secretary's permission first."

Andrew last year gave his backing to the Brides without Borders, started by local resident Jessica Siavoshy, at its House of Commons launch.
