LETTER: Hounslow's post offices disappearing - Khalsa12.00.00am GMT Fri 17th Dec 2004
Dear Madam / Sir, Where we live a total of four local post offices have closed. To make matters worse the Hounslow West Post Office on the Bath Road has closed as well! It was the nearest alternative for people from our area. This post office was already busy before the smaller ones closed, but recently you could count on queues at just about any time. "I have been using this post office for the last 30 years, and never dreamed that it would ever close, it is shocking," said one local resident I talked to. Another shopper was concerned about pensioners, "where are they supposed to go now? They did not just collect their pensions here, they also met with other people of the same age." All local residents oppose the closure and want to start a campaign to reopen it. Liberal Democrats in Richmond managed to have a new post office opened to replace a closed one. We can do the same here in Hounslow. Twickenham Lib Dem MP Vince Cable has led the national campaign against the closure of post offices, supported by both the Lib Dem PPCs for Hounslow Borough, Andrew Dakers and myself, Satnam Kaur Khalsa.
